CMS is short for Content Management System, a type of program that when used on the web allows designated website content to be edited without the need for writing or editing HTML code. This means that anyone who can operate a word processing program can edit the contents of a website if it is set up with a CMS.

Web CMS works with HTML based web pages and often includes a tag such as “editable” to distinguish which fields may be altered with the CMS software. This allows for a website’s design and layout to be handled by a web professional, while the text and photo content can be managed by the client without altering the layout or interfering with the back end coding. The above photo is a sample of a CMS editing window; the layout and tool bars are similar to that of any text editor, making it easy for those without web coding knowledge to edit the text. (Click photo to enlarge.)

When a CMS is used at GetCreative, the client is given “authoring” permission with log in information to access their site securely. Web pages can be previewed before publishing, and any pages can be restored within 90 days of making revisions. Other features include a file uploader, image editor and the ability to edit website titles, descriptions and keywords. Our CMS is handled entirely online and therefore eliminates the need to download any software.

It is important to note that a CMS works with HTML, but cannot be used to edit Flash or other rich media applications. It is advantageous to consider whether you will want to use a CMS to edit your site early on in the creation of your website, to ensure that the code is written in a way that will be easily editable later. At GetCreative the majority of our websites are written and organized in a fashion that makes switching to a CMS a quick and uncomplicated process.

For more information or to begin using our CMS to edit your website, contact us via e-mail.

In this spirit of Spring, I bring you a blog post full of cheerful color. Today, I have for you a collection of colorful logos, some of which made the cut with clients and others that have sat quietly on my hard drive, waiting for their moment to shine. Until today. Today they are let free to glisten in the sun and catch your eye and all the other wonderful things logos are meant to do. Some will look familiar, as they sit proudly in the headers of various GetCreative designed websites, while others are new to the public eye. Contact us for logo design information and pricing.
Here is it, the second installment of before and after screen shots of websites that have been redesigned by GetCreative. The amount of change varies depending on the needs of each client, some receiving an entire new look while others just needed an update. Enjoy!

Before

After

Baker’s Kitchen is a wedding and specialty cake bakery in Richmond, Va. I first encountered Baker’s Kitchen at my sister-in-law’s wedding, and contacted them soon after. With so many gorgeous cakes to display, photos were a high priority in the design of this site. The client had also recently ordered new business cards, which is where much of the inspiration for the color and the logo were derived from. I love the whimsical and sweet quality of this site- perfect for such a great bakery!

Before

After

Royce Overton at Computer Rescue contacted me after coming across another site I had designed in the same industry. Because I promise each of my clients a unique, individual site design, the challenge with this site was to create a look that was reminiscent of the design Royce liked, but with its own distinct personality. The red and white and blue colors came from the owner’s unusual vehicle: and ambulance converted into a computer repair truck, which also serves as a moving billboard for the company. The logo was recreated based on a previously existing logo, with a few embellishments.

Before

After

Campaign to Save Honor is a group dedicated to revitalizing and improving the Honor System at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The colors for this design were an easy pick, going with UVA’s Orange and Navy Blue color scheme. The group had a significant amount of text that needed to be included in the site, so we used limited photos and created a clean and organized structure for the textual content.

Before

After

All About Family was referred to me through another client, and we seemed immediately to be a great match to work together. President Dianne Inman recognized that their site was failing to compete with other businesses in their industry, so we set out to remedy that. With the client willing to start from scratch, the first element of this design was a new logo. To go with the simple, sleek logo we chose to work with a brighter, sunnier color palette. Choosing stock photos that tied in with both the colors and the content of the site was instrumental in completing the look. After the addition of a Site Map and some SEO work, the All About Family website is now well equipped and able to contend with competing companion care agencies.

Thank you to my wonderful clients for allowing me to use their before and after shots. We’ll be back with more transformations soon!

All About Family, Inc. is a personal assistance and companion care agency in Richmond, Va. One of the great things about my job is the opportunity to work with a variety of companies in any industry. I was essentially unfamiliar with the job that All About Family (AAF) does in the community, but after learning about their work I can imagine that their services would be invaluable to almost anyone at some point in their lives. I am reminded to be thankful for the lack of monotony present in my day-to-day work with such a varied group of clients.

For a company that specializes in taking the utmost care for people in times of need, I could not think of a more appropriate person than President Dianne Inman to run such an operation. Dianne is a very sweet lady who had nothing but positive things to say while we worked together. She operates a very efficient and well-run business, managing not to lose sight of the true focus of the company: caring for others.

AAF provides at-home care not only for the elderly, as I first imagined, but for many diverse people at different stages of life. They are available to care for those with both short- and long-term illness, pregnant women both during and after pregnancy, and even individuals who could merely use some company in their daily routines. The range of service is adjusted depending on the needs of individual clients, whether you need help with housekeeping or a live-in caregiver.

The Site

The first step for AAF was creating a new logo to represent their company. Their previous logo was effective but somewhat 2-D and lacking a creative twist. Their new logo is also simple, but is true to the company’s compassionate identity.

After finalizing an appropriate logo, I began creating a color scheme for the website. Dianne herself is such a bright and cheerful woman that there was no doubt that this company needed clean, happy colors for their website. I took the yellow from their previous logo and made it a deeper, richer color. This coupled with a burnt orange, the burgundy of the logo and a good amount of white space created a bright website without being dull or washed out.

For the website layout I chose a bold horizontal navigation bar under a gradient header that incorporated the logo. This along with a gradient footer makes up the foundation of the site, with well placed text, photos, maps and other elements arranged throughout.

This design is definitely a favorite of mine (though I have found that my “favorite” design changes almost as often as I create new sites!). Have a look around the All About Family site and let me know what you think of the design, color, layout, anything! Thanks for reading, and thank you to Dianne and her staff for being such a great client to work with.
